The Official MyLifeIsBroken FAQ

Since I get a lot of questions, I'm posting this FAQ. I apologize if you have heard it all before. You might still find something new or at least get a chuckle.

What in the world as gotten into you?
See my first post.

Well, Bob, aren't you just being a little dramatic?
OK, perhaps...

Why a whole year, is that really necessary?
A year just seemed right. I wanted to enjoy four seasons of freedom but in reality I will be working part time in the Winter.

Did your job give you a leave of absence?
Prior to quitting I was a self-employed software contractor. That is the most tenuous job situation I've ever been in. No, I'm not on leave of absence, I quit my job. In reality, though, there are indications that I may be able to go back to the position I left.

Where are you going?
Nowhere. Lots of places. Since I have a mortgage to pay and I want to do some house renovation I'll still be here in Maryland. However, I hope to travel about a week out of every month. Currently planned trips: Sept-Utah, Oct-Rhode Island, Nov-San Diego, Dec-RI, March-FL, May-Yosemite, June-RI, July-Outer Banks. I also hope to take at least one trip "abroad" as they say. I may also drive cross-country next spring.

Why don't you sell your house and travel around the world?
At this point in my life I have managed to accumulate a lot of "stuff" and I need a place for it all. Hence the house and mortgage. Besides, traveling around the world has never been my thing, I'm really quite a homebody.

Aren't you just going to end up eating bon-bons and watching soap-operas?
(Yes, folks, these are real questions that I've been asked.) Well, in some form or another that is a real temptation. But I'm finding that the real motivation for me is not to blow an opportunity I'll only have once this side of retirement. It does feel kind of weird waking up to an alarm when you're on extended vacation. I don't set my alarm often enough but I suppose that's just one of the things you need to do to keep the bon-bons at bay.

Do you have any goals?
Too many, but the bigs ones are (not in any particular order):
  • Get in great physical shape including losing 50 pounds
  • Renovate my house to salable condition (not an "as is")
  • Rejuvenate my spiritual life
  • Maintain job skills by developing some piece of software that is at least worth giving away
  • Chip away at my list of "things to do before I die"

Can't you do those things and work too?
Now that wouldn't be any fun, would it? There's more to this than just a list of goals. Mainly there's the "not working" part.

After a year won't it be hard to get back to work?
Ouch, you had to use the "w" word, didn't you. I'm sure it will be. I will be working a couple of months in the Winter. And then there's that mortgage thing.

Did you save enough money for me to join you?
Sorry, you forget what county I live in. Now if you could transplant you and me and my house to West Virginia or the backside of Wyoming then maybe we can swing it.
